Dear Backpacker:

For the next four weeks you are going to be a part of a special learning experience. It is not an easy vacation but it should be a lot of fun -- the fun that comes from enjoying the results of hard training, preparation and planning. A very important part of the fun comes from being with your friends. Another part comes from enjoying our beautiful New Jersey forests.

Like any other course, your learning and your enjoyment depend mostly on your own attitude and performance. Following through on the personal goals that you set at the beginning of the project is the key to learning and fun.

This course should help you become the kind of person you want to be. That is certainly very important.

Whether you are cleaning out a dirty pot, tiptoeing around the edge of a sharp cliff, climbing a mountain in a steady downpour or just sitting quietly with a friend watching the stars peeking through the orange haze of a setting sun, I hope you really learn to enjoy yourself and enjoy your friends.

Well, we have miles to go before we sleep!

Fr. Mark, O.S.B
