Opening Wide the Doors of Opportunity: Strengthening Financial Aid

Scholarship resources at St. Benedict's Prep allow us to do more than help a select number of deserving candidates. They enable us to fulfill our mission of offering a quality education to young men who cannot find it in their local schools and cannot afford more expensive schools. These students, chiefly from the urban areas of Newark and surrounding communities, define our mission. Giving them opportunities to learn and grow and succeed is what we are about.

Nearly one-quarter of our students come from families with incomes below $22,000. More than half of our students’ families qualify for financial aid, with awards in 2001-2002 averaging $3300 toward our donation-subsidized tuition of $5735.

An unusual scholarship challenge program from a corporate sponsor, MBNA America, has enabled us to generate nearly two-thirds of our annual financial aid budget each year. This matching program has been extended to 2010 to provide a firm foundation for our aid program. Yet we know that student aid needs to be increased by $300,000 over present levels during the next five years. We cannot allow need to deny them the opportunity of a St. Benedict’s Prep education.

Ensuring that opportunity for students means that we must increase our scholarship endowment by $5 million over the next five years.
