Preparing for College

The college search begins in the Upper Division II year. Informally, students begin to put together "the list" after doing various college searches online. Then they are able to discuss those results with college counselors, teachers, and alumni. Students and parents are also welcome to schedule individual conferences with the college counselors that demystify the whole college application process. Throughout the first semester of each year, representatives from approximately forty colleges and universities visit St. Benedict's Prep to meet with prospective students in the Career Development Center. Please keep in mind that colleges are looking for many things including:

  • Course Selection: It’s essential to take the hardest classes possible. These courses will most likely be offered in the junior and senior years (for example, Chemistry Lab, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, etc.). Please know that all students are on a college preparatory track. The most important part of a student’s application to a college is the transcript, because it shows what a student did over the course of three-and-one-half years. A high GPA and class rank are crucial when applying to top schools.
  • Standardized Testing: Testing officially starts at SBP in October of the sophomore year with the first administration of the PSAT. This is followed by a second PSAT administration in the fall of the junior year (The PSAT scores will be mailed to the office in late December/early January). Juniors take the SAT I exam for the first time in the winter of the junior year, and then they take the exam as necessary. (On average, each student takes the SAT I exam 3 times.) Students also take the SAT II, when applicable, beginning in the junior year. The Princeton Review is offered at St. Benedict’s two times each year.
  • Extracurricular Activities: It is important to have a well-balanced high school career. While it is impressive to see a great deal of commitment in a few select areas, you also want to demonstrate interest in a variety of areas, especially academics, athletics, community service, etc.

Visit the Career Development Center: This center provides a host of resources for all Gray Bees, ranging from college materials and programs to career development programs. A number of activities are coordinated between the College Placement Office and the Development Center.
