Crew at The Hive is built on discipline, perseverance and culture. Since its founding in 2011, the program has challenged students to push past their limits and discover strength that only comes from trusting in their teammates.

Founded by Craig White '04, the program originally aimed to make crew accessible to an underrepresented Black and brown community that has historically been priced out. In the early years, nine students would run over four miles to a boathouse in Kearny before even stepping into a shell. Today, the program has grown to over sixty athletes who train out of a state-of-the-art boathouse in Newark, a testament to the growth of the program and the commitment of coaches and various benefactors.

The once small program has provided big opportunities for its athletes. In 2021, three senior rowers: Jayden Dasher ’21, Yamil Harris ’21 and Alvaro Paulin ’21, qualified to participate in the USRowing Pathway Program, with Dasher and Paulin continuing their rowing careers at Hobart College. Graduated rowers have continued their careers at schools such as Rutgers, Iona and Dominican University of New York. Together, these accomplishments reflect the culture that has defined the program since its founding: let kids fail. Only through learning from failure can student athletes discover what they're truly capable of.

Every stroke moves the boat, but every setback moves the athlete.
