For more than a century, Gray Bee runners have pushed themselves and their teammates across courses throughout New Jersey and beyond, fueled by endurance, determination and tradition. 

Under longtime coach Jim Cavanaugh, St. Benedict's established itself as one of the state's earliest cross country powers. Beginning in the 1920s, the Gray Bees captured championship after championship, including a Prep National Cross Country Championship in 1923-24. That success continued across generations, with the program accumulating more than 20 state championships and establishing a tradition of excellence in distance running at The Hive.

Generations later, Edward Cheserek '13 carried that tradition onto the national stage. One of the most accomplished runners in St. Benedict's history, Cheserek dominated throughout his time at The Hive, winning back-to-back Foot Locker National Cross Country Championships and being named the 2012-13 Gatorade National Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year. He continued his career at the University of Oregon, where he became the first freshman to win the NCAA Cross Country Championship and ultimately captured 17 NCAA championships during his collegiate career.

Today, head coach Scott Bamberg, Jr. '16 and assistant coach Khalil Elliott-Flemming '16 carry that legacy forward, challenging a new generation of Gray Bees to compete with the same discipline and perseverance that have defined the program for more than a century.
