Girls Varsity Fencing
Fencing at St. Benedict’s is a story of grit, growth, and excellence.
From humble beginnings training with broomsticks in the cafeteria to sharing the strip with a cadet world team member on exclusive Radical Fencing flooring, the team’s journey reflects a commitment to relentless improvement.
As one of the nine original Olympic sports introduced at the 1896 Games in Athens, fencing holds a deep legacy both globally and in Newark. That legacy grew stronger in the 1930s, when Dr. Gerald Cetrulo began coaching at Barringer and Seton Hall, helping the sport take root in the Tri-State area. The sport’s growth hasn’t slowed since, much like the fencing program at St. Benedict’s Prep.
Founded in 1985 by students, the St. Benedict’s fencing team is built on a foundation of hard work and resilience. The motto “Hard work beats talent when talent fails to work” is instilled in every fencer who steps onto the strip. From the golden years between 1992 and 2008, when St. Benedict’s secured every state title, to the challenging seasons that followed, one principle has remained unchanged: a Benedict’s fencer never buckles or yields.
At St. Benedict's fencing is not defined by club affiliations, tournament wins or national rankings. It is, and always will be, about one thing: who wants it more?
The answer is simple: St. Benedict’s Prep.
