Br. Bruno Mello, O.S.B., professes solemn vows
When Br. Bruno Mello, O.S.B., hears the St. Benedict’s Prep alma mater sung at events, “I always forget that I didn’t go to Benedict’s. The culture and community are so strong, I feel a part of it.”
Br. Bruno, who first arrived at The Hive in 2017 as a college student and Benedictine Volunteer, professed solemn vows on October 5 in a service the monk describes as, “a weekend to celebrate God’s faithfulness.” The solemn profession of vows is a monk’s definitive commitment to the community and monastic life. The service, held at St. Mary’s Church, was well attended by monks, students, faculty, staff, parishioners, seminarians from Seton Hall University and Br. Bruno’s family members. The Gray Bee Choir sang a beautiful rendition of the hymn, “Ubi Caritas,” to mark the occasion.
Br. Bruno was raised in Lebanon, Conn., and attended college in Ohio. He entered Newark Abbey as a postulant in 2019 and has taught philosophy during Summer Phase while progressing on his spiritual journey. The Benedictine monk anticipates another two years of studies at Seton Hall to complete dual master’s degrees in divinity and moral theology.
“I’m looking forward to teaching here full-time in the not-so-distant future,” said Br. Bruno, “and being fully present on the Property and fully entering the community.”
