Cameron Bernard Jones’s Journey to West End Stardom

Wanda Jones and Cameron Jones, Sr., parents of Cameron Jones ’06 and Fr. Edwin D. Leahy, O.S.B. ’63

A gifted performer at The Hive, Cameron Bernard Jones ’06 planned to study biochemistry in college until several teachers intervened and helped the Gray Bee earn a place at the conservatory at Northwestern University. His first big break post-college was landing a role in Porgy and Bess at The Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen. Mr. Jones is currently a London-based actor, singer and dancer, who credits include West End productions of Ain’t Too Proud and Motown: The Musical.

He credited every part of the Benedict’s experience — Convocation, academics, choir, Drama Guild, track & field and volunteer events — for his growth as a human and artist. Every endeavor involved, “Dedication and hard work, persistence, patience, love and grace were the features that seasoned me as a Benedict’s man.”

Mr. Jones thanked many faculty members who influence his path, with special shout-outs to Marc Onion ’89 (who encouraged the performer to apply to Northwestern), Director of Theatre Patricia Flynn H ’95 (who remains his favorite drama coach), and the School’s beloved nurse, Regina Blackwell H’10, who passed away in 2014.

“These people allowed me to simply be. They encouraged me to truly relish in my magic and greatness, and their generously fostered my passions with their wisdom and grace,” Mr. Jones stated. “This is an honor I will truly never forget.”

Mr. Jones is currently on tour in Europe and spoke to the Benedict’s community via a pre-taped video message. His parents, Wanda and Bernard Cameron Jones, Sr., accepted the Medal of St. Benedict’s on his behalf.
