Let’s Investigate

Middle Division science labs enhanced with essential improvements

The Healey Family STEM Fund has once again boosted scientific investigation at The Hive. Created with a generous donation from Dorothy and John Healey, Ph.D. ’58, the STEM initiative helped transform the Middle Division science classes into a more functional space. A small closet situated between the Life Science (seventh grade) and Physical Science (eighth grade) classrooms has been remade to accommodate two self-contained sinks, paving the way for teachers and students to conduct more labs and experiments.

“It opens up more possibilities for our Middle Division science courses,” said Science Department Chair Jon Marlow. With convenient access to running water, Science Teacher David Couto conducted an advanced lab on cell organelles with seventh-graders. Tracy Scerra’s eighth-grade science class utilized the sinks to test the Archimedes Principle and determine the density of different objects.

The Healeys’ son, Sean, also supports the Fund, which was established in 2017 to strengthen STEM learning at St. Benedict’s Prep. Basic improvements to the science lab used by the Girls Prep Division in St. Mary’s Hall have also been made thanks to the generosity of the Healey family.
