Alfred Chawonza, who has the top 800-meter time in the country this season, on Thursday signed his National Letter of Intent to continue his career at Texas Tech University.

Chawonza, a senior, who hails from Zimbabwe, picked the Red Raiders of Lubbock over such schools as Texas A&M, Michigan, LSU and Penn State. He holds St. Benedict’s records in the 600 meters (1:19.61), the 800 (1:50.57), and the 1000 (2:25.77), while joining his teammates for school relay standards in the 4x400 (3:19.48) and the 4x800 (7:43.68).

“It was tough leaving home, but I knew coming to St. Benedict’s would give me a lot more opportunities,” said Chawonza, who came to The Hive during his sophomore year. “The exposure I got by being here is why I’m able to go to Texas Tech. It’s what I’ve looked for since I was little and now it’s becoming a reality. I can’t thank my teammates, coaches and St. Benedict’s enough for this opportunity.”

Chawonza and his Gray Bee teammates will cap the indoor season by competing in the New Balance Nationals in New York City this weekend.
