Students in graduation

June 9, 2021

Headmaster Fr. Edwin Leahy, O.S.B. ’63, will speak on the creation and success of the Girl’s Prep Division at St. Benedict’s Prep at a Strategic Leadership International Course (SLIC) on Friday at the John C. Stennis Space Center in Mississippi. Lead Instructor Capt. Robert “Gus” Gusentine, USN (Ret.) invited Fr. Ed as part of the course’s in-person curriculum.

The SLIC is a four week, in-resident professional development curriculum designed for senior military leaders, diplomats and senior government officials from U.S. partner nations. The course supports key aspects of the 2019 United States Strategy on Women, Peace, and Security (WPS), a policy framework that recognizes that women must be critical actors in all efforts to achieve sustainable international peace and security. WPS promotes women’s equal and meaningful participation in peace processes, peace building and security.

To support the course’s WPS curriculum, Fr. Ed will share the story of a small group of female high schoolers who were determined to continue their education in the Benedictine tradition when the all-girls Benedictine Academy announced its closure in February 2020. The young women advocated for a co-institutional Girls Prep Division at St. Benedict’s Prep, convinced the Board of Trustees to approve the division, recruited the first class of students and ran the day-to-day operations of the School through the Group System, just as boy’s have done at St. Benedict’s since 1973.

In sharing the story of the Girls Prep Division after its first full year of operation, Fr. Ed will address global issues related to WPS strategy that include:

1) the power of inclusion and belonging
2) the unique value of women leaders in society
3) the incredible capacity of women for conflict resolution
4) the mission-critical contributions of women in building community
