Jared Boone '13 is currently in California taking part in a first-of-its-kind event – My Brother's Keeper Rising Alliance Conference. Educators, students and elected officials from all over the country are converging on Oakland as guests of former President Barack Obama.

My Brother's Keeper initiative is a call to communities to close opportunity gaps for minority boys, especially African-American, Latino and Native American boys. Obama said that over 100 male students will attend the alliance’s first national gathering. The My Brother’s Keeper Alliance is part of the Obama Foundation.

Obama and NBA basketball superstar Stephen Curry opened the conference on Tuesday evening with an audience talkback session. Other stars expected to make an appearance are actor and Newark native Michael B. Jordan, singer John Legend and director Ryan Coogler, among others.

Boone was invited to join MBK Rising as an educator who is doing exceptional work with young men of color in Newark. He even got a spot on a TV news segment on CBS Channel 5 in Oakland:
