Students in graduation

Look for the fall issue of St. Benedict’s Prep, which will be delivered to Gray Bees soon. You’ll see some familiar and unfamiliar faces from The Hive who are doing their part to accompany kids at St. Benedict’s.

Two of the newest members of the Board of Trustees — Mark M. Lee Esq. ’92 and Naml Lewis ’93 — are also featured. Mr. Lee, a Partner in the White Collar Defense & Investigations practice group at BlankRome in Philadelphia, believes the Board will benefit from having more alumni representing 1973 and forward, when St. Benedict’s re-opened after the one year closure in 1972. “The School looks a lot different now than it did before it closed,” he explained. “I think it’s important that some of us look like the School and can tell the story of what it was like growing up in this community, having used the tools that St. Benedict’s provides, and having had some success in the private sector.”

Mr. Lewis — Executive Director of the Institutional Equities Division at Morgan Stanley in New York — didn’t hesitate when asked to join the Board. Growing up in Central Newark, he recalled, “There were many days where we would walk to school, and the things that we would see, no kid at that age, obviously, should have to see. So, I keep going back to that notion that for some of these kids – it’s life or death, that is true, and it’s real. These kids are me. It’s very personal, and it’s important for me to be able to give back to an institution that gave so much to me.”

The complete conversation with Mr. Lee and Mr. Lewis appears in the Fall 2019 issue of St. Benedict’s Prep, along with the Honor Roll of Donors. A total of 3,193 alumni, friends, businesses, foundations and organizations raised more than $10.9 million in FY 2019 for The Hive, the most dollars raised since 2006.
