Sebastian Chalbaud on Wednesday was named the Gatorade New Jersey Player of the Year for boys soccer.

Chalbaud joins an elite list of athletes from St. Benedict’s who have won the Gatorade Player of the Year Award. A number of those athletes have gone on to stellar professional careers after The Hive – Claudio Reyna, J.R. Smith, Tyler Ennis and Edward Cheserek are just a few.

Chalbaud hopes to carry that legacy to the next level – he intends on taking his talents to the University of North Carolina later this summer and eventually follow with a professional contract.

“We have had some fantastic players at St Benedict's who have earned the Gatorade player of the year award before and Sebastian rightfully belongs with some of the names at the top of that list,” said St. Benedict’s soccer coach Jim Wandling. “For me, Sebastian is one of the most complete players that we've had at the school and checks all the boxes of what a future professional looks like.”

Chalbaud, as the central playmaker, help guide the Gray Bees last fall to a perfect 19-0 record and an unprecedented 11th National Championship. He is the 12th player – 7th in soccer – from The Hive to be named the Gatorade New Jersey Player of the Year.

“It has been a great privilege for the coaching staff and our players at St Benedicts to watch Sebastian play day-in and day-out over this past year,” said Wandling. “He has been a great role model for our younger players, demonstrating a professional mentality towards the game at all times. Sebastian is the type of player that makes everyone around him better. He is a special kid and a special talent.”

The Gatorade Player of the Year Award, which is given to athletes in 12 sports, annually honors the top high school students for their athletic excellence as well as academic achievement and exceptional character on and off the field.

Chalbaud, who was a First Team All-America by, is now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Boys Soccer Player of the Year Award, which will be announced later this month. Reyna ’91, in soccer, and Cheserek ’13, in cross country, are the only two St. Benedict’s products to ever be lauded with Gatorade’s national award.
