Sharing the St. Benedict’s Prep Model Nationwide

Following the 2016 “60 Minutes” feature on St. Benedict’s Preparatory School, parents, educators and religious leaders from across the United States reached out with two questions: How do you do it? and How can we use the Benedict’s model to strengthen our own schools and communities?

In response, the Fr. Mark Payne Institute — originally called The Vox Institute — was established to share the proven educational practices of St. Benedict’s Prep with public, private and charter schools nationwide. Named for Rev. Mark Payne, O.S.B. ’69 — a Benedictine monk, physics teacher and the visionary behind The Backpacking Project and the Group System — the Institute serves as a resource for schools seeking to improve student leadership, community building and academic success.

The Fr. Mark Payne Institute has worked with schools in Milwaukee, Baltimore, Cleveland, Tulsa and beyond to adapt the Benedict’s model to their unique educational communities. National nonprofit Transcend, dedicated to creating more equitable learning environments, recently recognized St. Benedict’s Prep by including it in the Innovative Models Exchange, a collection of 40+ transformative school models available to communities rethinking and reshaping education.

The work of the Fr. Mark Payne Institute is focused on four core pillars:
