Take a look at highlights from last year's symposium.
Never do for students what students can do for themselves.
— Fr. Mark Payne, O.S.B. '69
WHAT TO EXPECT
The We're Doing It Wrong symposium provides a transformative experience for educators looking to engage with practical, student-centered approaches to education. This event immerses participants in the Benedict’s model, a system that emphasizes student leadership, mental health and learning through doing by leveraging experiential education.
This symposium doesn't follow the traditional model of professional development. It’s a dynamic, interactive experience designed to inspire and challenge your approach to education. You'll leave with a deeper understanding of what true student-centered education looks like and the tools to reimagine your own approach to teaching and learning.
Open to educators and thought leaders at all levels, this event offers a rare opportunity to rethink the future of education alongside peers from across the nation. Be prepared to engage, reflect and lead the change. Click here to learn more about the Fr. Mark Payne Institute.
SCHEDULE & AGENDA
Upon completion of this symposium, participants will receive a physical and digital certificate that may be presented to their respective districts for seven (7) hours of professional development credit.
Arrival & Welcome | 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.
Introduction & Overview | 9:00 a.m. - 9:15 a.m.
Fr. Edwin Leahy, O.S.B. '63, the 50-year Headmaster of St. Benedict's Prep, will introduce the School's educational model and its four pillars: community development, student leadership, socio-emotional health and experiential education.
Community Development Experience | 9:15 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.
"Give up what you want for what we need!" Being supportive of, accountable to, and responsible for others, allows a community to grow and thrive. Unfortunately, our education system stresses individual success and achievement at the expense of, or independent from, others. In other words, our education system focuses on 'I' - community focuses on 'we'. Experience the power that comes from students and adults focusing on 'we'.
Socio-Emotional Experience (Rotating) | 10:00 a.m. - 10:55 a.m.
"You can't educate the mind if the heart is broken." Emotional noise clouds the hearts and minds of many of our young people today. Despite the wide-spread calls for more attention to socioemotional health, it is evident that commonplace educational practices do not uphold this ideal. See the benefits of cutting through the emotional noise and eliminating the stigma associated with tending to mental health.
Student Leadership Experience (Rotating) | 11:00 a.m. - 11:55 a.m.
"Don't do for students what students can do for themselves." Students can and will rise to challenges when given the opportunity. Students will also make mistakes and learn how to fix them when they are provided with the space and support to do so. In the age of snow-plow parents and high-stakes testing, our education system does not allow students to rise to many challenges (other than academically) and certainly is afraid to let them make mistakes. You'll notice the difference when you put real responsibility in the hands of students and what it means for adults to step back while students step up.
Experiential Education (Rotating) | 12:00 a.m. - 12:55 p.m.
"The only easy day was yesterday." Opportunities beyond the classroom allow students to put their learning into practice. These shared experiences also allow students to form life-long bonds with others. The current educational model is heavily focused on curriculum guidelines, and less on the true needs of our young people. Feel the power in creating shared experiences which challenge students beyond their comfort zones.

2024 Symposium Testimonials
I expected to be lectured to about how we need to change, but instead, I experienced it.
I literally had no idea (what to expect). I was invited at the last minute. I thought it might be a keynote speaker followed by smaller sessions....I'm literally blown away.
The counseling session was 'off the charts'.
